Great news! WIC can now offer yogurt to women and children age 1 and older. It is a nice addition to the dairy group.
Why is the dairy group important?
Dairy foods provide calcium to keep bones strong, plus vitamin D, potassium and protein.
Most people don’t get enough dairy, so yogurt is a delicious way to add more dairy to your diet. People who are lactose-intolerant are often able to tolerate eating some yogurt.
How much food is needed from the dairy group each day?
The recommended amount of dairy varies by age. Toddlers need 1 1/2 to 2 cups a day. Children under 10 need 2 1/2 cups and children over 10 through adults need 3 cups.
What counts as a cup in the dairy group?
Here are a few examples:
|Yogurt||1 cup (8 ounces) 6 ounces = 3/4 cup 4 ounces = 1/2 cup|
|Pudding||1 cup made with milk|
|Frozen yogurt||1 cup|
|Ice cream||1 1/2 cup|
|Soy milk||1 cup calcium-fortified soy milk|
There are many ways to use yogurt. Try it plain or mix it with fruit of cereal for a healthy snack. Check out the WICShopper app for more ideas and to see which yogurts are available with WIC. You can also watch our dietitian Kimberly make a yogurt parfait over on our Facebook page.
